Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
For as long as I can remember I have been trying to find ways to help out my community and the people around me. I went from helping mentally challenged children, to helping out the homeless, to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) . LLS is a leading, nation-wide organisation which raises funds to help beat blood cancer in numerous ways. I participated in the competition created by the Student Visionaries in partnership with LLS as the candidate (leader) of my team along with my friend Sienna Martin.
As team leaders, we were able to recruit 7 other hard-working students to help us achieve our goal of raising $50,000 for individuals suffering from Leukemia and/or Lymphoma. As our fundraiser came to an end, we managed to raise close to $70,000, beating our goal by $20,000 and exceeding all expectations.
Through this amazing experience, I learned how to fundraise and how to make high level presentations to land pitches to large corporations and high-profile individuals. I was taught not to be embarrassed to reach out to people and to never give up, even though I got discouraged many times throughout the campaign. Moreover, I learned how to be a good and encouraging leader as I had to coordinate the team and keep everyone organised and motivated. It wasn’t an easy journey but the things I learned from my fundraising experience are values that will last me a life-time and hopefully help me exceed expectations in the future as well.
